Pacaya Samiria National Reserve 5 Days 4 Nights

Pacaya-Samiria, Peru's second largest protected area after Tambopata-Candamo, spans over two million hectares. It comprises alluvial terraces, floodplains, tropical rainforest, and vast river basins with freshwater lakes and wetlands. With 1000+ animal species and 965+ wild plants, it's a paradise for nature lovers. Indigenous communities and oxbow lakes like El Dorado thrive, supporting experiential tourism.

Itinerary

Day 01 Iquitos-Nauta-Pacaya Samiria Ecolodge

  • AM Upon arriving in Iquitos, transfer to the town of Nauta on the shores of the Maranon River. Here you will board a motorboat for a 90-minute ride to the Pacaya Samiria Ecolodge*.

  • During the wet season, it is possible to stop on the way for a brief visit to Fundo Casual, a high forest protected area that is managed by the local population and where introductory wildlife spotting can be done.  

  • PM Arrival at the ecolodge and welcome by a member of the Kukama Kukamiria ethnic group.

  • Accommodation in cabins according to your reservation

  • Discussion on myths and legends of the Amazon.

  • Evening walk in the forest surrounding the ecolodge.

Day 02 Ecolodge-Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

  • Breakfast at the ecolodge.

  • AM Take a few minutes for a surrounding forest walkthrough following the trail of the primates. Mainly walk over sandy soil.

  • Departure from the ecolodge by motorboat and ride across the Maranon River to the Nauta Caño area in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

  • In this area of the reserve,  there is a strong chance to spot pink and gray dolphins.

  • Besides the numerous streams and oxbow lakes found within Pacaya Samiria there are also several jungle trails we can follow to look for wildlife.

  • Box lunch en route.

  • PM Return to the eecolodge.

  • Dinner.

Day 03 Ecolodge-Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

  • Breakfast at the ecolodge.

  • Day tour to the Yanayacu-Pucate area in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

  • Visit with the residents of the Veinte de Enero Community.

  • The locals will demonstrate how to climb the aguaje (Mauritia flexuosa) palm tree.

  • Box lunch en route.

  • In nearby oxbows and rivers, we can also  find the  pink and grey dolphins

  • Wildlife spotting from the boat and while hiking in the forest.

  • Dinner.

  • Overnight at a safe spot where we will set our campsite.  

Day 04 Pacaya Samiria National Reserve-Ecolodge

  • Breakfast at the campsite.

  • AM We will continue exploring the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve also known as the Mirrored Jungle because of the clear reflection of the sky and surrounding nature upon the dark-colored water of its rivers and lakes.

  • Box lunch en route.

  • PM Sail on the Yanayacu River as we begin our way back to the ecolodge. We will observe the unique rainforest vegetation that grows on the river shores as well as the animal species that wander about. 

  • Return to the ecolodge in the afternoon.

  • Dinner at the ecolodge.

Day 05 Ecolodge-Nauta-Iquitos

  • Breakfast at the ecolodge.

  • Maranon River tour to Cocha Shiriyacu (Lake Shiriyacu) where traditional fishing takes place.

  • Visit with the residents of the San Jorge Community, interact with them, and learn about their way of life and ancestral customs

  • Visit the Kukama Women Crafts Center (Pua Kamatawara), a sustainable development project that receives support from the ecolodge.

  • Boat transfer to the town of Nauta.

  • Overland transfer from Nauta to the airport or to the city of Iquitos
