Chachapoyas 5 Days 4 Nights

PYT 007

The Pre-Inka Chachapoya society flourished from 900 AD to 1400 AD. Their stronghold was the citadel of Kuelap nestled on a mountaintop above the Utcubamba River Valley in northern Peru, where the Andean eastern slopes meet the rainforest. The Chachapoya were known as the "Warriors of the Clouds". Tall and pale-colored, they were ethnically distinctive from other peoples of ancient Peru.

The Inka Empire was not able to conquer the fierce native Chachapoya until around 1470 AD. And when the Spanish conquered this area around 1570, they received support from the Chachapoya people to battle their former enemies. Kuelap was soon after abandoned and remained so for hundreds of years. Rediscovered in 1843, it remained only known by the local people of Chachapoyas until the 1980's when archaeologists began exploring the whole site.
